When the World Feels Scary

If you've been watching the news at all lately, you'll know what I mean when I say that the world feels pretty bleak to me right now. Not only do I feel some fear for what might happen next, but my heart also aches for those who are having to flee from their homes. For those being separated from their family members. And everything else going on... I figure I'm not the only one in the Shadow's Edge community feeling this way, so here is a letter for when the world feels scary.

You're not alone in these feelings.

If you're a natural empath like me, then maybe you've experienced feeling like the only one that's worried about whatever scary thing is going on. Maybe you've even thought something like "Why isn't anyone else freaking out more about this?! Am I the only one that's this upset?!"

You are not alone in this! Maybe those in your immediate circle aren't as worried, but that doesn't mean you are alone with these thoughts. This is when social media is a great thing. Finding others to talk about your worries with can help you not feel so alone.

Also, it could be that those around you actually are feeling worried as well, but they just aren't showing it! Sometimes we disassociate or pretend a problem isn't there to protect ourselves from our own fear. Everyone is different and copes in their own way. So don't jump to the conclusion that someone doesn't care or is a "bad person." Remind yourself that they may just be coping in their own way. And trust me - it can be hard to do that sometimes. It comes with practice.

When the world feels scary and out of our control, do what you can to be the change.

As single individuals, we can't always control what is happening on the other side of the world. Nor can we always control the outcome of what's going on in education, politics, and human rights as just one person. It takes the thoughts and words of many people for change to happen. When something bad is happening to someone, the worst thing we can do is stay silent.

Talk with your loved ones about what's going on! Start conversations that matter! Ask how we can help those who are suffering! Maybe even donate to a charity relating to the cause you are passionate about. And if there is something going on in legislature that you have concerns about, write to your local government official and ask questions and voice your worries! Silence is the worst enemy to anyone wanting change for the better.

Remember to take care of yourself when things are getting to you.

You are only human, so you need to do what you can to make sure you don't fall apart. If you've had the news channel on repeat all day, turn it off for a little while. Nurture your mind, body, and spirit so you have the strength you need. Maybe that's singing or dancing to your favorite album. Or drawing. Possibly meditating. Whatever it is that reawakens who you are in your heart.

I know I can't change much for you...

… but I hope it helps to know you're not alone in these feelings. But just remember that when the world feels scary, there are people out there doing everything they can to make the world a better place. For every person doing scary things, there are more working towards good.
