There aren't many TV characters in wheelchairs or fighting to keep their pain under control. But the actors behind these characters are just as susceptible to health problems as you are. Not only that, but despite these health problems, many actors, artists and musicians continue to push forward in their careers. Here are 5 young celebrities who are succeeding despite their challenges:



Pink: Pink was born with a collapsed lung and has struggled with severe asthma ever since. She has even been hospitalized for her condition and speaks about learning to breathe differently than other singers.



Michael Phelps: Michael was diagnosed with ADHD at age 9 and

began taking stimulants to manage the condition. He remembers being humiliated when a school nurse reminded him to take Ritalin in front of his friends.




Selena Gomez: In 2013 Selena Gomez disappeared for months and in 2015 she revealed the reason why – she had been undergoing chemotherapy to treat the condition lupus, an autoimmune disease in which parts of a patients blood turns against their own organs.



Sarah Hyland: Due to a disease called kidney dysplasia, in which small sacs of fluid replace normal kidney tissue, Hyland had to receive a kidney donation from her father.



Nick Cannon: In 2012, Cannon was hospitalized for "mild kidney failure" and then again when doctors found blood clots in his lungs. Cannon's conditions were caused by a lupus-like autoimmune condition in which his immune system had turned against his kidney and lung tissue.
